Dowry is the money or property that is demanded by the bridegroom when he marries a bride. The system of dowry has now become a curse to the society. The torture upon the women by men is a very common sight of today. Sometimes the women become a victim of loss of life as a result of the torture by their husbands. The main reason of dowry is negative attitude of the parents of the bridegroom and the lack of education of the bride. The bridegroom takes dowry and the womenfolk become victims of dowry.

    The dowry system is banned already. At least since 1980. Question is, whether "banning" and passing harsh laws can fight the social plague?


    In Urban societies, males are against the dowry themselves. And there is no material property agreement to marry. Yet, while facing a divorce, women would launch false dowry cases for revenge. 90% of the dowry cases launched are false. Usually they are settled out of court with the husband's family paying ransom to the wife's family. The law is not used by the victims, and rather criminal minded women who wants their innocent in laws jailed.


    May be instead of using a criminal law as a tool for extortion by greedy ex-wives, we ought to change the outlook of the society. Educate women, empower them. Teach parents that the daughter herself is an asset and needs no bribery to wed her off.

    A woman while married, will not want his bread earner husband to be jailed and risk starvation. Only time when Dowry laws in its present form might be used is during divorce. Probably that's why the real victims don't come forward. Unfortunate dowry related violence and deaths occur. While the crime is rampant, the law is doing little to help them. On the other hand, it is quite the tool of revenge. It would be used to control a husband, should he ever dare want out of the marriage.

    And social movements work much better in such situations rather criminal laws. The vaccination programme in Bangladesh is an example. THe current dowry laws are only helping corrupt women and lawyers make money in out-of-court settlements during a divorce.

My Native Village - Paragraph

The name of my native village is Karapur. It is a renowned village in the district of Barisal. It bears in  testimony to this heritage of  it's  glorious past. It's beautiful scenes and scenery feed the eyes of the viewers.  It's  land area is about three square kilometers with vast green fields on all sides. Two well-conducted  road run through the village leading to all directions. Nearly two thousand people live in my village. Most of them are Muslims and few of them is Hindus. Both Hindus and Muslims live together. Most of them belong to middle class.  Agriculture is the main occupation to the villagers. About 80% of the people are agriculturists. Some traders and service holders also live here. There are two primary schools, one high school,one madrasah in this village.
